NEW LOOK HADWEN MEDICAL PRACTICE UNDERWAY

The surgery, which is situated on Glevum Way in Abbeydale, is undergoing a £5 million refurbishment and extension programme bring facilities up-to-date, as well as meet the growing capacity of the local area.

“We are delighted that after many years of planning the development has now started and are very excited that, once complete, we will have a first class primary care facility that will meet the current and future needs of our patient population,” said Ian Robertson, Management Partner at Hadwen Medical Practice.

Built by Speller Metcalfe, and with architectural and project management services provided by GVA, the first stage of work will see the pharmacy relocated into temporary accommodation before construction of a new three-storey extension, which is being built on the existing car park and will be linked to the original practice via a walkway.

The new building will offer a mixture of consulting and treatment rooms, as well as minor procedures and general offices.

Externally, a new car park is being built at the rear of the building that will triple the current capacity and be accessed via a pedestrian bridge.

“We will be undertaking the building work across a multi-phased programme to minimise any kind of disruption to staff, patients and residents,” said Andy Metcalfe, joint owner at Speller Metcalfe.

“The result will be a fantastic new medical practice that will fully accommodate the needs of local people.”

The second phase of works will involve the remodelling of the original doctor’s surgery to form a new layout with additional consultations rooms and a new pharmacy.

Gareth Cox, project manager GVA’s building consultancy team adds, “This is a landmark day and one that represents a bright future not only for the GPs and staff, but for all patients and visitors to the Practice.

“GVA’s specialist primary care team has been working with the GPs over a number of years since the very inception of the project, through feasibility advice, planning, architecture and now enabling construction to commence. We’re delighted we have been able to assist the Practice in realising their ambition to transform their original building into providing clinical facilities that meet their requirements both now and into the future.”

Local County Councillor Andrew Gravells said: “Having worked closely with the Practice Manager I know that a lot of hard work has gone in behind the scenes to get us to this point, and the new extension is going to make this one of the most up-to-date and best equipped Medical Centres in Gloucestershire.

“Both as the areas’ local County Councillor and a patient at this centre, this is a great day for health facilities in both Abbeydale and Abbeymead.”

Work is due to complete in September 2018.
